In his book Rethinking Education in the Age of Technology (2009, ISBN 978-0-8077-5002-5.), Allan Collins observes that children raised on new media technologies are less patient with filling out worksheets and listening to lectures because they already participate on a global level, and are able to receive better feedback online.   This often manifests as a  lack of participation in a traditional classroom.  Traditional classrooms have students do assignments and when they are completed, they are just that, finished.   In contrast, Web 2.0 shows students that education is constantly evolving, and participating in a class discussion or engaging in a forum discussion with technologies available  in a Web 2.0 classroom increases levels of participation.

In traditional classrooms students score well if they regurgitate a relatively narrow band of information from their set books, and satisfy a constrained “learning outcome”.  In a Web 2.0 classroom each student’s assignment should vary markedly from the next.  If they then share in a discussion they are exposed to a broader, more varied body of knowledge seen from many points of view.   In a stroke, a far more exciting and richer learning experience.

We are pleased to invite you to an evening with the Questioners’ club to hear Annemarie Lombard speak on Sensory Intelligence in gifted kids. This is open to club members and their invited guests.

Title: Sensory intelligence in gifted children

Abstract:
Sensory intelligence refers to the understanding and insight of how the brain process what we see, hear, feel, taste, smell and receive through movement to transfer this into actions and behaviours for learning, working and living. This is a unique process for each individual as we each have different sensory thresholds by which the information are being received and processed. This is the reason why some of us get irritated in noisy environments while others thrive on it. Referring to our recent successful 2010 World Cup Soccer, the vuvuzela’s were either loved or hated….loved by those with high thresholds and hated by those with low thresholds. Knowing your child’s sensory stressors and sensory needs will assist you to understand their behaviours and manage their attention, emotions and behaviour more effectively. It will assist parents to make the home and study environment more conducive while advocating their child’s best interest for schools, extra murals and others involved with your child. Supplying parents with this insight and strategies have changed their lives to create more harmonious homes and facilitate the child’s potential in all spheres of life. For more information please visit their website

SUNDAY 20 JUNE 2010
08:30 – Caltex on R27 at Melkbos
09:00 – main gate at Atlantis

We will meet at the Melkbos Caltex on the R27 (West Coast Road) at 08.30, have a cup of coffee while everyone appears and then drive through to Atlantis at 09.00.

We will drive through the dunes and have a picnic lunch on the sand, so you will need to bring:
- picnic

The cost will be R150 per vehicle and I will need a complete list of all vehicle registration numbers.

We should be able to accommodate those without 4x4s in other vehicles.

Only vehicles with 4×4 and low range are suitable for the dunes.

SO – INTERESTED PARTIES:

Please advise the following:
- Registration number of participating vehicle;
- Number of seats OFFERED to saloon passengers; and
